Cops miss deadline to upload data on rape, dowry death convicts

The Haryana Police on Thursday failed to upload the names and details of all those people convicted for crimes against women on the website of the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB).

This comes days after the police announced that it would upload the names and details of over 1,000 culprits — including those convicted for rape, molestation and dowry death in the last 10 years — on the website on January 10.

Laik Ram Dabas, Director of SCRB, said: "From our side, the database is ready. But last week, it was sent to the DGP for his approval. He is expected to visit the SCRB's office in Madhuban on January 13. We will discuss the case with him that day and hopefully upload the database after that."

"There is no legal problem in uploading the database on our website. But sometimes these initiatives take time, since these are official matters and are implemented through proper channels. Hopefully in a few days, we will be able to upload it on the website," Dabas added.

When contacted, Director General of Police S N Vashisht said, "I have received the details, but we are in the process of examining the legal aspect of going ahead with such a concept. I cannot predict the exact date when we will upload it on our website, but all I can say is that we will do it very soon."

Legal experts, however, claimed that though there should be no legal problem in uploading details of convicts on the police website, but in cases where convicts have appealed in higher courts, the police needed to be careful. "In case any convict has challenged his conviction in the higher court and his plea has been accepted, the police may land in soup if his details are uploaded on the website," said a criminal lawyer.
