The Quick Reaction Team (QRT),constituted by the Chandigarh Police in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai attack to foil similar terror plots in the city,is all set to get more teeth. The elite force is being strengthened with additional manpower and will be armed with latest weapons. The UT Administration has decided to increase the strength of the QRT from 45 to 100 commandos,trained on the pattern of the National Security Guards (NSG). The QRTs will also be armed with latest sophisticated weapons to combat hi-tech terrorists. In a press release,the Chandigarh Police claimed that the city has been on the radar of terrorists. Recently disturbing reports have hinted at the presence of some suspected terrorists in the neighbouring states. This made us increase the strength of QRT commandos and equip them better, said a senior police official. UT Senior Superintendent of Police S S Srivastava said they will be provided with two bullet and grenade-proof vehicles costing Rs 50 lakh each. The commandos will be armed with latest sophisticated weapons as AK 47 (7.62 mm) USA or Russian make (100),Carbine MP5 A-3 (100),group pistol 9 mm and 19.9 mm (25) and night vision devices. The commandos will also be provided special kits given to the NSG commandos at the time of operation. The QRT personnel are being trained in making a dynamic entry into a building; dealing with active shooting situations; rescuing entrapped hostages and citizens in the custody of armed people; coping with cases of vehicle and bus assaults and a variety of special threat and high risk incidents besides bomb detection,Srivastava added.
