In what will go down as one of the fastest solved cases of abduction, the Punjab Police successfully managed the release of a young woman, twelve hours after she was abducted from Zirakpur on Thursday morning.
“The Punjab Police solved the abduction case within 12 hours and secured the release of Shelja (23). She was released with all her belongings and the car has also been recovered,” said Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jatinder Singh Aulakh while speaking to Newsline over the phone.
Shelja was abducted while she was on her way to Machra village near Meerut (UP) along with her husband Shekhar Tyagi, 24, in their Alto Car. The couple was reportedly waylaid and the abductors fled off with Shelja in the car after beating Shekhar. When abducted, Shelja had 3 mobile phones, Rs 10,000 cash and luggage along with the Rs 2-lakh worth jewellery that she was wearing.
Aulakh, who led the operation all through, maintained the cops even resorted to firing to arrest the abductors and ensure the safe release of the abducted woman.
The abductors have been identified as Tarsem Singh of Kauli village in Patiala, Parveen Pandit of Sir Kapra village in Patiala and Raju of Patiala, added the SSP.
Having been booked for abduction with intent to murder under relevant sections of the IPC and Arms Act, the accused were brought to the Zirakpur police station. A .315 bore country-made pistol was also recovered from their possession.
“While further investigations are on to determine the antecedents of the abductors, the sole motive for the abduction appears to be extortion,” added Aulakh.
