  • Arjan Singh from Kheri in UP says that in the edition dated December 7, 2007, the story on page 5, “Tiger crusader ‘Billy’ Arjan Singh faces land-grabbing charge”, describes him as a ‘land-grabber” in unauthorised possession of UP Forest Department land in Dudhwa. He writes:”For the last 50 years I have farmed here, in Tiger Haven, at the edge of the Dudhwa Reserve Forest, with the full knowledge of the Forest Dept. which has never levelled any such charges. At this stage of my life, when I am 90 years old, it is shameful that such baseless allegations should be made. “Let me reaffirm that I make no claim on any land that is not legitimately mine...”.

The Indian Express replies: Arjan Singh had been named among top land-grabbers in a list prepared by the North Kheri Forest Division. They said they had sent him a notice to vacate 40 hectares of land. The story also carried Arjan Singh’s quote, denying that he had received the notice and asserting that he was the owner of the land in question. The story carried an inset box highlighting Arjan Singh’s work for tiger protection and the awards and medals he has received.
