  • The residents of Ward Number 46 are reportedly upset after the sanitation wing of the Municipal Corporation banned throwing of garbage at a site near Hotel Fortune Klassic. The reason: Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal is a regular visitor to the hotel whenever he is in the city and the garbage dump was an eyesore. Therefore to please Badal, area residents were asked not to throw waste in and around the hotel.

Up in arms against the move, Rajinder Bhatia, son of local councillor Amarjit Kaur Bhatia, blocked traffic near the bus stand flyover for nearly two hours on Wednesday. Area residents also burnt the effigy of MC Commissioner outside the hotel.

Bhatia, however, weighed his words carefully and did not state the exact cause of shifting the garbage bin from the site.

“The MC should allot some other site if they have banned throwing of garbage at the present site. Residents of Abdullapur Basti and adjoining areas are facing undue harassment and do not know where to throw the garbage. As a result, it is strewn around everywhere. This is the scenario since the last one month but MC authorities are not providing any solution. Even after today’s traffic jam, no MC official has promised to allocate some other site,” he rued. Though the MC authorities did not take any action, it was the commuters who had to bear the brunt of the residents’ ire.
