Phase I: 146 nominations for 14 seats

The filing of nomination papers for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls for the 14 parliamentary constituencies in the state ended on Thursday. The polling on these seats will take place on April 30. A total of 146 candidates have filed their nominations and Purulia holds the distinction of maximum number of nominations. Apart from candidates of Left Front,Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP),BJP and the Congress,12 others have submitted their nomination papers from Purulia. The Left Front,BSP,Trinamool Congress-Congress alliance and the BJP have fielded candidates from all the 14 seats. Sharad Pawar’s NCP has, meanwhile, fielded two candidates from the Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling constituencies. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on April 11 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is April 13.

Meanwhile,in order to prevent false voting through postal ballot system (only polling personnel use this system),the Election Commission has decided to issue election duty certificates (EDCs). Polling personnel with an EDC can cast his vote in the remaining five assembly segments other than the one where he resides and the one where he works. The move is aimed at preventing incidents of false voting. Opposition parties often complain that because of a delay in the postal system or because of carelessness, these ballots get lost. As a result, false votes were allegedly cast in the name of the candidates.
