Courier delivery man held for raping 60-year-old in Mumbai

The Powai police on Sunday arrested a Borivali resident for allegedly raping a 60-year-old woman at her Marol residence on Saturday.

According to the police, the accused, Ashok Kumar (42), works as a courier delivery man and is known to the victim. He allegedly visited the accused at her residence on Marol Military Road around 12.30 pm on Saturday, where he allegedly forced himself on her and fled.

The victim, after a couple of hours, called up her neighbours and appealed for help. They rushed her to the Bombay Hospital, where she is currently attended to.

"The hospital authorities called us on Sunday morning to inform us that a rape victim had been admitted. We sent a team to the hospital and recorded the victim's statement based on which we identified the accused. We then launched a manhunt. There are no CCTV cameras in the building, which could have helped us. However, there had been an exchange of calls between the victim and the accused, and we used his cellphone number to track him down," said a police officer.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Saki Naka division) Shantilal Bhamre said, "The accused was picked up from near the Tata power line area in Borivali. The victim has undergone medical examination and reports are expected by Monday."

Watchmen at the building where the victim resides told The Indian Express that the accused had visited the victim several times in the past.

The victim is a retired schoolteacher and a widow. She has two children, both of whom work abroad and she stays here alone, they added.

The police are now checking whether the accused has a past criminal record.

Court quashes order against Pooja Bhatt

In a relief to producer and actor Pooja Bhatt, the Bombay High Court has quashed an order of a lower court to initiate criminal proceedings against her for alleged obscenity over the poster of her 2005 film Rog.
