In an obvious mix-up,an approval letter meant for BJ Medical College (BJMC) Pune from the Medical Council of India (MCI) for starting a post-graduate diploma course in orthopaedics was sent to BJMC Ahmedabad, based on which the latter started the course six months ago. The Ahmedabad college is now faced with a dilemma as what to do with a student it had admitted to the two-seat course.
It was in June last year that BJMC Pune sought permission from the MCI to start the course. The procedure takes place in three steps. The MCI has to carry out an inspection, after which it sends a permission letter that makes the course a recommended one. The MCI then sends the permission letter to the Central government, which in turn gives us the permission to start a course. We had applied for this particular course but we havent got any approval letter, said an official at BJMC Pune.
SV Ghorpade, deputy dean,PG section, said an MCI team had visited the college in August. According to rules, the MCI has to inspect the infrastructure and departments of the college. However,we have not got any reply from the MCI after the visit. We had contacted the authorities but they have not yet sent us any reply. It was only when Newsline contacted the college that they came to know that the letter had not arrived because of a confusion owing to similarity in names of the colleges. We didnt know that the confusion regarding the college names had led to this delay.
Ghorpade now plans to write to the MCI again to clear the confusion and obtain the requisite permission.
Meanwhile,BJMC Ahmedabad has admitted a student for the course after getting the permission letter. We had applied for the same course two years ago and when the letter arrived,we admitted a student for the course. Now having learnt that the letter was actually meant for BJMC Pune,we have sent a letter to MCI seeking permission to continue with the course this year. We are not blaming anyone; its a human error, said Dr MM Anchaliya, deputy dean,PG,BJMC Ahmedabad.
The MCI,on the other hand, has put the blame on the Central government. An official from the PG division of MCI said,We are aware of the issue. However, the work of MCI is only to recommend a college for a course, which we did. We send our recommendation to the Central government and it is their responsibility to forward the letter to the respective colleges.
