Court order today on Owaisi ‘hate speech’

A Hyderabad court will on Thursday deliver its verdict on a complaint against Majlis-e- Ittehadul Muslimeen MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, at the centre of a controversy for allegedly making a "hate speech".

Several political parties have strongly condemned Owaisi's remarks, accusing him of using inflammatory and derogatory language while addressing a public meet (MIM Jalsa) at Nirmal town of Adilabad district last month.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court heard the application of Kashimshetty Karunasagar, a practising advocate, who claimed he was being threatened over the phone since he filed the complaint against Akbaruddin and requested the court to hear the case directly.

The court posted the matter for hearing on Thursday when it will deliver its order on whether to direct the police to file an FIR against Akbaruddin over the provocative speech, as alleged by the petitioner, or should it take direct cognisance of the offence and issue summons.

In Delhi, activist Shabnam Hashmi on Wednesday filed a complaint against Owaisi for his "highly objectionable and inflammatory" speech.
