The Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jindal today dismissed the bail application of Sagar Chauhan, main accused in the murder of truck driver Kamal Singh in Rudraprayag last year.

Chauhan’s bail application said that the prosecution could not provide any substantial evidence regarding his involvement in the case.

The judge however dismissed the application as Amarjit, the cleaner of the truck, had already identified him as one of the accused, said public prosecutor N K Goel.

On September 4 last year, when seven members of a gang including Chauhan were arrested, the local police had claimed to have solved two cases of robbery and the murder of Kamal Singh. Later, the police arrested 13 more persons in the case including notorious gangster Om Parkash Saini.

According to the police, the gang had allegedly stolen a truck of Khushdil Transport Company from Chandigarh and kidnapped the driver and cleaner. The truck was reportedly loaded with goods. Later, the accused allegedly killed the driver while the cleaner managed to flee.

“The gang, impersonating as an Excise department team, stopped the truck loaded with medicines, submersible pumps, and welding cylinders on August 6 last year on the Mouli-Handesra road. But as soon as the driver and the cleaner got down, they overpowered them and took them to Rohtak and then to Rudraprayag,” said a police officer.

He added, “There they threw the driver in the Alaknanda river after giving him an injection of sedative, and tied the cleaner in a sack after strangulating him. Since they presumed that the cleaner was dead, they left him there. Later, the cleaner freed himself and reported the crime to the police.”
