Court sends IRS officer to prison for contempt

The Delhi High Court has ordered 15 days simple imprisonment for an Indian Revenue Service officer, S K Srivastava, for repeatedly violating court orders. He was also fined Rs 2,000.

"The respondent is guilty of willfully and consciously violating orders of the court," said Justice Rajiv Shakdher in his order on Friday.

The court said Srivastava had written letters to various authorities against two women IRS officers "which are both uncivil and in poor taste". Following an appeal filed by the women, the High Court had directed Srivastava on March 1, 2011 to "restrain from writing" such letters.

But the court noted that Srivastava had continued to write such letters, and his wife had also sent a similar letter to the finance minister which "contains the same set of offending remarks against the petitioners". The women then filed a contempt plea against Srivastava.

Earlier, the two women had accused Srivastava of sexual harassment. He was suspended for three years, due to which his promotion was delayed. Following this, he had started writing letters complaining against the duo.

While Srivastava refused to speak on the court's order, his advocate S K Gupta said: "The court did not disclose the identity of the women but has disclosed the identity of Srivastava's wife. It has also ignored the gravity of charges against the women. We have many grounds and we will challenge this order soon."

Srivastava has 15 days to appeal the court's order.
