In a landmark discovery, scientists have discovered water molecules in the polar regions of the moon, courtesy ISRO and India's maiden moon mission Chandrayaan-I, the NASA said on Thursday.

Instruments aboard three separate spacecrafts, one of them the Moon Mineralogy Mapper, a NASA instrument onboard Chandrayaan-I revealed water molecules in amounts that are greater than predicted, but still relatively small, it added.

"Water ice on the moon has been something of a holy grail for lunar scientists for a very long time," said Jim Green, director of the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

"This surprising finding has come about through the ingenuity, perseverance and international cooperation between NASA and the India Space Research Organisation," he said.

From its perch in lunar orbit, NASA said M3's state-of-the-art spectrometer measured light reflecting off the moon's surface at infrared wavelengths, splitting the spectral colours of the lunar surface into small enough bits to reveal a new level of detail in surface composition.

When the M3 science team analysed data from the instrument, they found the wavelengths of light being absorbed were consistent with the absorption patterns for water molecules and hydroxyl.

"For silicate bodies, such features are typically attributed to water and hydroxyl-bearing materials," Carle Pieters, M3's principal investigator from Brown University said.

She added that by 'water on the moon,' they did not mean lakes, oceans or even puddles. Water on the moon means molecules of water and hydroxyl that interact with molecules of rock and dust specifically in the top millimeters of the moon's surface.

wait a bitBy: Abhinav | 13-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward nasa works in space feild step by step.they made a lot of instruments which help them in doing so. So there is no comparasion between nasa and isro.for ex: mars mission, appolo mission,IST and also nasa austronaut has the ability to live in zero gravity.thanku
ISRO did nothingBy: Mayank | 10-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Chandrayan did nothing. It was Nasa's Moon Mapper who detected water on moon. In fact if you do some research you'll find out that Nasa already knew about water on moon and it just confirmed it after getting data from Moon Mapper on Chanrayan and ESA Spacecraft. So kindly do not give the credit to ISRO of NASA's hard work.
water in appoloBy: ben | 05-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward all parents please tell your children that it is indians who invented water in moon, but it is us found water in appolo ........
MrBy: Nishanth | 25-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Good work ISRO and NASA. As they have said, we will get only "1" teaspoon of water from kilograms of lunar soil present in polar region. Will they transport a gaint machinary to moon inorder to convert soil into water. Also how will they split oxygen to breathe from Hydroxyl. Anyways it is left for scientists to experiment.. Mr.Nair and crew- I could see lots of criticisms arising .Dont listen to them ..keep going and acquire moon. All the best..
Enjoy, enjoy!!By: H Srinivas | 25-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Madhavan Nair and Annadurai are real jokers and provide us lot of entertainment by making Tughalak-like statement very now and then in the media. What the hell are these people doing all these day, if moon impact probe, MIP found water on the moon? The MIP crash-landed on moon in October 2008 itself. If the government allows Nair to continue for a few more years, he may send Suryayaan to Sun and find water there also! Kasturirangan - another trumpeter of ISRO - told the media that vegetables can be grown on the moon. It is high time to send these fools to moon to grow vegetables there.
