CPJ asks Delhi Police not to charge TV channel for interview

A US-based eminent journalist body has asked the Delhi Police to refrain from pressing charges against a news channel which aired an interview with the friend of the Delhi gang rape victim who died last week.

"This is an instance of greatly misplaced priorities. Authorities are hardly protecting the victim's rights by retaliating against news media that are bringing to light details of the horrific crime that claimed her life," said Bob Dietz, Asia programme coordinator for Committee to Protect Journalist.

The Delhi Police last night decided to register a case against Zee News after the channel aired the interview.

"Police should immediately drop their misguided plan to file charges," Dietz said in a statement.

New York-based CPJ is an independent, non-profit organisation that works to safeguard press freedom worldwide.

In the interview, the person was severely critical of the police response and indifference of the public while he and the deceased girl lay on the road after being thrown out of the bus on night of December 16.
