Auto fare 'illegal': HC seeks reply from govt

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday asked the Transport Department why it did not fix fare of auto rickshaws as it did for bus, taxis and others. Hearing a PIL filed by residents of Hooghly, who sought the High Court's intervention into the issue, the Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Pratap Kumar Roy and Justice Subal Baidya asked the transport department to file its reply before December 3 when it would pass an order. The bench also said the government should act according to the legal provision of Motor Vehicle Rule.

The PIL has alleged that auto owners or union of the auto drivers illegally decided the fare, while the transport department remained silent.
