Fighting for survival in Bengal, the CPM has lapped up the claims by Kim Davy and Peter Bleach, the main accused, that 1995 Purulia arms drop was a Narsimha Rao government plot to destabilise the Left Front government, saying it will make the issue the main plank of its campaign for the remaining three phases of the Assembly election.
CPM general secretary Prakash Karat demanded a probe into the case and interrogation of jailed former MP Pappu Yadav, named by Davy as the person who had assisted him.
Claiming the arms were meant to be supplied to Ananda Margis to foment violence to destabilise the Left Front government,Karat said his party had being saying forces, both internal and external, were out to unseat the Left using pretext of violence.
Now also you see same pattern… Forget Ananda Margis and replace with Maoists, he said, arguing that the spectre of violence was being used to destabilise the Left. Political violence has claimed lives of a large number of CPM activists and supporters but the then Home minister goes to West Bengal and says it has become a killing field and the CPM is responsible, Karat added. Chidambaram is a member of the government of which Trinamool Congress is a part… The same Trinamool which is openly aiding and abetting Maoist violence in Bengal. The conspiracy to unseat the Left front government has not ceased.
Meanwhile, the BJP and Congress entered into a war of words. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said it was the then Home minister L K Advani who had sought Presidential pardon for Bleach. The BJP does not disclose contents of the detailed recommendations of the then Home minister without which an anti-national arms-dropper could not be given Presidential pardon.
The BJP rubbished the claims. The allegation against Advani is maliciously false. Bleach was convicted according to Indian legal system and was in jail for years. If because of an international diplomatic request,he was granted pardon,to criticise the government is wholly unjustified, BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
CBI clean chit to politicians
The CBI Friday said there was no evidence to link any Indian politician with Purulia arms drop. It also said it has clinching evidence against Kim Davy, and was making all efforts to bring him to India to face trial.
CBI has elaborate details about how Davy carried out… the arms drop. There is no evidence that any govt agency or politician helped, said CBI spokesperson Dharini Mishra. CBI is trying to bring Davy to India as it has been able to establish in an Indian court and to Danish govt that Davys crime is… act of terror.
Will sue Left leaders, says Ananda Marga
Ananda Marga said on Friday that it will file defamation suits against Prakash Karat,Budhadeb Bhattacharjee and Biman Basu for saying that the arms dropped in Purulia were to be supplied to its members to unleash violence. Ananda Marga Public Relations Secretary Kalyaneshvarananda Avadhut said in a statement that a Kolkata court had given a clean chit to organisation in the case. The statements are ill intentioned and amounts to contempt of court, Avadhut said.
