Having waited for 17 long years, Muslim groups on Tuesday asked the government not to waste more time and table the report of the Liberhan Commission on the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Parliament immediately and act on its findings and recommendations.
The CPM, too, has asked the government to make the report public. “In any case the report is delayed after the Commission got so many extensions. Now it is the responsibility of the government to make it public and take action against those who are responsible for the demolition of Babri Masjid,” Politburo member Brinda Karat said.
For Zafaryab Jilani, convenor of the All-India Babri Masjid Action Committee, the contents of the report were important as it could establish the role of BJP leader L K Advani in the conspiracy. A court in Rae Bareli had discharged Advani as an accused in the case in 2003 after the CBI dropped conspiracy charges against him in the chargesheet.
“If the Liberhan report finds a conspiracy angle against Advani, then the CBI can reinsert the conspiracy charges against him in the chargesheet. The government has to act upon it and it must place it before Parliament,” he said.
While Jamaat-e-Islami-Hind chief Maulana Jalaluddin Omari hoped that the community would get justice, All-India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat’s Zafarul-Islam Khan wanted the Government to come up with an Action Taken Report soon. Chairman of the Babri Masjid Action Committee, Javed Habib, said a fast-track court should be set up to try those involved in the demolition and announce financial aid for the victims of the riots that took place after December 6, 1992.
