One person was killed and four others were critically injured when firecrackers stored in a room of a residential complex exploded accidentally Saturday evening in North Kolkata. The building housed Dwariks, one of the oldest sweetmeat shop in Kolkata.
Of the five extricated by the fire brigade men,one died on the spot and four others were taken to hospital in a critical condition.
The deceased has been identified as Bijoy Bera,a 17-year-old boy,who probably worked as a worker at the firecracker making unit being operated in the house. The tragic incident on the eve of the festive days has cast a pall of gloom in the area.
According to police sources, the firecrackers stored in the room somehow got ignited, triggering a huge blast. A family member of the shopowners,Gautam Ghosh was critically injured and had severe burns injuries.
The impact of the blast was so heavy that one portion of the building collapsed trapping several people under a pile of debris. The dead could not be identified immediately. Four fire tenders were pressed into service to mount the rescue operations.
The police are looking if any explosive material was stored in the room as mere firecrackers would not have had caused such a huge impact. Forensic experts would examine the place on Sunday.
