  • While the CPM indulges in introspection over its failures in the recent Lok Sabha elections, party’s other strongholds seem to be developing cracks.

During a meeting of the Kolkata Police Association, that is dominated by the Left, association members called for the removal of their general secretary Arindam Mukhopa-dhyay and president Chandan Gupta. The opposition camp in the association has made it clear that it would continue with its agitation till the two office bearers are removed.

Some of them have even gone ahead demanding that a central committee meeting be convened to bring in a no-confidence motion against the two persons. Around 1,000 members participated in the meeting that was held at the Bharat Sabha Hall on Wednesday.

“We do not wish to form a new organisation. But we want corrupt leaders to be removed and some fresh faces be introduced,” said a member. The top brass has been blamed on various grounds, including mismanagement of compensation amounts allotted to families of deceased police personnel. “In the lower ranks, there are random suspensions, dismissals and departmental proceedings against constables against which the leaders of the association have done nothing.” said a member.

They also alleged that nothing had been done to revise the pay scales of riders, wirelesss helpers, dandees and majhis.

“We had organised a function at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in November. All the contracts that had been made with the advertising agency had not been disclosed to us. I did not know about them even though I was in the organising committee,” said a member. “The treasurer of the committee, Soumen Das, was also not aware of it,” he added.

Mukhopadhyay has refuted the claims saying that a group of people was trying to take advantage of the prevalent political situation in the state to satisfy their own means.
