Dr Kiran Seth, founder SPICMACAY,on the need to preserve our rich cultural heritage
It is a movement by and for the young. SPICMACAY is not an organisation,it is a movement, says Dr Kiran Seth, founder of Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth, delivering a talk on Our Core Competence at the citys Government College of Arts.
Introducing some of those who made SPICMACAY possible,Seth insists that young people pitch in with their time and energy to help preserve not just our art, heritage and culture but also our inner space. We thrive on volunteers, people from all walks of life can find a place here. Dinesh, for example,is a successful engineer,Dr Lavasa a senior pediatrician,Dhruv a businessman and yet they find the time for SPICMACAY. They regard it as more worthwhile than just earning money, Seth says.
Seth,an IIT Kharagpur alumnus, recalls the way the movement grew, from a small thought into a passion, weathering trials and tribulations on the way. I was at Colombia pursuing my Ph.D,when I sat through a classical concert by the Dagar Brothers. The music had a profound effect on me and since then,it has been my endeavour to safeguard our classical traditions in music and dance.
Seth has only two paid employees and two rooms at IIT Delhi, where he teaches. The calendar of events gets busier with every passing year, with the movement having a strong presence in both India and abroad.
Philosophy, art, craft, theatre, says Seth, represent an approach to life unique to the country. In our rush towards the top,we often lose our foundation. We have to make sure that our classical music and dance is preserved. We enrich our lives by promoting and preserving our culture and spreading it through education and concerts, signs off Seth.
