Congress president Sonia Gandhi gave credit for the party’s good show in the Lok Sabha elections to her son and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi and “the good work of our government”.

She was addressing party workers at a function at the Firoz Gandhi Degree College in Rae Bareli on Thursday. Gandhi was on a thanksgiving visit to her constituency from where she won by a margin of over three lakh votes.

“Rahul’s contribution helped us get such good majority,” Gandhi said, echoing what many leaders in her party have already said following the Congress’s improved performance in the recent polls.

“The 2009 elections have been historic because we have been able to beat anti-incumbency across the country. Such a thing has happened after a long time and it is only because of the good work of our government at the Centre — be it the NREGS,health schemes, schemes for women empowerment etc,” she said.

Gandhi addressed five meetings of party workers, one in each Assembly segment of Rae Bareli. With daughter Priyanka Vadra accompanying her,the UPA chairperson also took the opportunity to acknowledge her contribution.

She thanked the party workers for ensuring record victories for the Congress in Rae Bareli and Amethi. The people had sidelined those who indulged in caste and communal politics, she said.

Gandhi said the revival of the Congress in the state was “a good beginning”. “Now it is time that we should move forward and strengthen our organisation in each and every city,” she added.
