It seems the Municipal Corporation officials need a reason, big or small, to spark off controversies. In one such incident, the Congress councillors were pitched against Akali councillor Harjinder Kaur for dedicating a green belt to the senior citizens at a function to be held on Thursday.
While Harjinder Kaur wanted Municipal Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria and her name on the invitation cards, Congress councillors reportedly wanted the green belt
to be inaugurated either by the Mayor or Union
Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal.
The green belt in Sector 35 has been developed over the years. A walking path, a cinder track, topiary, etc were added as funds poured in.
Bansal had reportedly contributed to the park from the MPLAD funds.
Sources said a resident of the area approached the Mayor with a request that the green belt be inaugurated by the MP. While the request was forwarded to the officials concerned, Harjinder Kaur, being the area councillor intervened.
Harjinder said, “I was shocked to know that the Congress councillors wanted the local MP to inaugurate the green belt. Though it has been partially funded by him, there no such rule that only he can inaugurate it. I want the park to be dedicated to the senior citizens. Since tomorrow is the Senior Citizen’s Day, we will hold a function.”
The officials found themselves in a fix, not knowing whose name to include on the invitation cards.
