The annual press conference of the Delhi Police announced a dip registered in most crimes in the city. Newsline takes a look at the trends.
* Total Indian Penal Code (IPC) crime recorded a marginal increase in the Capital from 46,414 in 2008 to 47,072 cases in 2009 an increase of 1.42%. The total IPC crime per lakh of population showed a decline – from 286.32 in 2008 to 277.11 in 2009.
* Heinous crime in the Capital came down by 3%. The Delhi Police improved its overall successful detection rate for heinous crimes from 88.36% in 2008 to 89.04% in 2009.
* 523 murders cases were registered in the Capital in 2009 against 528 cases in 2008. According to the Delhi Polices analysis,15% of murder cases were due to sudden provocation on trivial issues,9% due to previous nmity,17% were passion triggered,7% due to differences between family members,and 12% due to disputes over property/money matters.
* Of the 841 persons arrested in murder cases in 2009,84% were either illiterate,school dropouts or had studied till Class X,56% of accused were less than 25 years,and 72% belonged to the lower economic strata. Nearly 94% of the murder cases were registered against first-time offenders.
* 353 attempt to murder cases were reported in 2009,as against 369 cases in 2008. Of the 353 cases reported in 2009,95.47% have already been solved.
* 2009 saw 26 kidnapping cases in the Capital,of which 24 cases have been solved. In 23 cases,the accused were known to the victim.
* Dacoity/robbery cases saw a significant rise in 2009,with 32 cases against 21 cases in 2008. 63% of the cases were committed at homes or on the road,and 13% were at factories or godowns. The rate of detection in such cases increased from 87% to 91%.
* 1,293 cases of snatching were reported in 2009,compared to 1,320 in 2008. Over 72% of such cases have been solved and 1,351 criminals arrested. In 56% of the cases,gold chains were targeted,while cell phones were snatched in 14% of the cases.
* 11,892 cases of motor vehicle thefts were reported in 2009,against 9,949 cases in 2008,recording an increase of 19.53%. Among stolen vehicles,6,438 were motorcycles,493 scooters,4,365 cars,11 taxis,98 autos,12 buses,150 trucks and 351 other vehicles. Motor vehicle thefts accounted for 25% of total IPC crimes committed in Delhi.
