The number of MPs with assets worth over Rs one crore has doubled in the present Lok Sabha compared to the preceding one as the average worth of assets of an MP has nearly tripled, a report has said.

The number of crorepati MPs has increased from 156 in 2004 to 315 in 2009, while the average worth of assets of an MP in the Lower House has gone up from Rs 1.86 crore to Rs 5.33 crore in the last five years, said the report compiled by an NGO, Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

The report, which has been prepared on the basis of affidavits filed by the MPs during elections, said there has been a huge increase in the worth of the assets of the 304 MPs of last Lok Sabha who contested the polls in 2009 also.

The average worth of assets of these MPs was Rs 1.92 crore in 2004. But in 2009, the average worth of assets of these leaders increased to Rs 4.8 crore, marking an increase of Rs 2.9 crore, the report said.

About 20 per cent members in the present Lok Sabha have assets worth over Rs five crore each. The number of members having assets worth between Rs 50 lakh to Rs five crore is 294, accounting for more than 50 per cent of total strength.

The number of MPs in Lok Sabha with assets worth less than Rs 10 lakh is only 17, the report said.

rammohan2000@yahoo.comBy: rammohan | 23-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward What we need is the list of all MP's with thier declared assets as well as surveyed assets. Madhu Koda's declared asset is 1 crore only, what a big joke on Indian democracy. Raja, and Jagan Mohan of course worth more than Mukesh Ambani too. Who will do that assesing and even if done any newspaper worth will have the courage to expose that. We will be like this only for the next 100 years. When Justice Dinakarn is still a judge, and a MP like Rahul with 1 crore plus asset wil spend 1 crore plus for a simple trip for the party work, these numbers dont have any value.
Rich getting richer and fasterBy: Prof. J. George | 23-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Indeed this is also indicative of the fact that higher economic growth since 2004 is leading to a phenomenon, namely, rich are getting richer at a faster pace. Consequently, the inequality increases even if poor do not become poorer fast enough. The 2007 official estimate of a high income growth state like Haryana had declared one in every four household belonging to BPL. The recently concluded assembly election results in Haryana do confirm that income inequality has widened and suggest a widening gap in development efforts. The 2009 elected MPs must give due diligence to development efforts. The bitter truth of the recent sugarcane fiasco is yet another indictment that the informal parliamentarian forum is inactive and candid discussion or engagements with grassroots level issues are being avoided. Certainly the source of income/asset growth amongst MPs is not a matter of speculation but hapless farmers must seek social justice at some cost.
Politicians and wealthBy: V K DAs | 23-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward That shows the degree of corruption in the political set up of our country and worse than that the politicians are not even ashamed of it and declare their ill-gotten wealth openly. Also it is widespread and not restricted to any one party.
CrorepatiBy: deepak | 23-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Being a Crorepati is like being a lakhpati 10 years ago, is no big deal,A simple corporator can become a Crorepati in 2 years time ,if he doesnt he is extremely honest. MLA minimum 5 cores in 5 years ,MP minimum 25 crores ,HOW MUCH of this they make on their own and how much goes to party is a differnt question . IF IT PARTY A/B/OR C roads etc remain same ,jAI HO
Crorepati MPs Doble in Lok SabhaBy: Shadi Katyal | 23-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward What is ther to be surprised. These are part of the funds which are allocated when one is first become MP. It used to 2 crores and now 4 crores but since majority does not represent anyone as they are allotted tickets for say Bihar while living in Bombay so there is no accountability and thus all goes in their banks. I dare all Indians to ask for full accounts of their Crores and dont be surprised if one finds athat it is all Revenue money and their sticky fingers and greed made them Crorepati. But with 35% corrupt and with criminal record, one should not expect any changes.CHALTA HAI BHAI YEH BHARAT HAI
