In an unusual incident that is likely to create fresh trouble, the CRPF men Sunday evening raided the office of Baramulla Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), who is probing the killing of four men in police and CRPF firing in this border town on June 29, and forcibly took away documents related to the inquiry from him.
ADC Mohammad Ashraf Shantoo, sources said, was busy compiling the probe report when CRPF men, led by DIG Rajeev Kumar, burst into his office and asked for a register that the inquiry officer had earlier seized from the CRPF.
Shantoo initially declined to entertain Kumar's demands, but when the latter reportedly threatened him of "dire consequences", the ADC handed over the register.
The ADC had seized the register from officials of the CRPF's 53 battalion while examining the original records of arms and ammunition supplied to the CRPF men deployed in Baramulla on June 29. Sources familiar with the investigation told The Indian Express that some important pages, including the page relating to issuance of arms and ammunition, were missing from the register. The missing pages raised the investigators suspicion and the ADC seized it for further investigation.
Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla Lateef-u-Zaman Deva had appointed ADC Shantoo to inquire into the June 29 firing and asked him to submit his report within ten days. The death of four men in the firing had sparked massive protests in Baramulla and Sopore.
The District administration remained tight-lipped about Sunday's incident.
