CRPF opposes Home’s plan to recruit tribal men for limited period

The CRPF has opposed the Home Ministry's proposal to induct tribal youths from 13 districts that are worst affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE) to fight the rebels for seven years.

The CRPF reportedly told the MHA that physical and educational qualifications for the youths may be reduced instead and they be recruited on a permanent basis.

"The induction of tribal youths in the CRPF will be a huge asset as they are naturally endowed in jungle craft and well versed with the terrain and local language," the CRPF said.

In August, the MHA had written to the CRPF asking for views on the plan to create a new force of 3,000 constables called "scouts", who would be recruited from the 13 worst affected districts in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Orissa.

The CRPF has argued that "the relaxation sought for the tribals will not affect the operational efficiency of the force". "The MHA is not willing to allocate funds for their training and barracks. The onus has been put on the CRPF to find them jobs as security guards if they fail to get inducted in the force after seven years. Moreover, it doesn't address the problem that after seven years they will cross the age limit of 23 years to apply for the job as constables," said a CRPF officer.

The MHA plans to induct them in the age limit of 18-25 years, and plans to pay them Rs 10,000 per month.

The CRPF has said as per the Labour Act, a candidate appointed beyond 180 days is liable for regular appointment, leading to legal complications.
