CSIR to launch academy of scientific, innovative research

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research plans to take interactive research programmes to another level and make them a regular feature in their yearly calendar.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) plans to take interactive research programmes to another level and make them a regular feature in their yearly calendar.

A few months ago,the centre had launched a unique experiment of training a batch of students chosen from across the country in post graduation courses in eight of its centres. The Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO),Chandigarh, was also one of them and is training nine students.

Taking the initiative of training engineering students further, the CSIR plans to establish its own Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research.

“The main aim is to change the prevailing mindset of parents as well as students to pursue engineering but not become engineers. Engineers today are preferring jobs in multi-national banks rather than gaining experience in the field of engineering,” said CSIR Director General Professor Samir K Brahmchari.

Under the course, known as Post Graduation Research Training Programme in Engineering (PRTP),100 positions were opened this year for engineering graduates in eight centres across the country.

As many as 14,000 applications were received.

“After tough scrutiny we selected 76 graduates from prestigious engineering colleges. Of these, nine are undertaking the research programme at CSIO,Chandigarh. The students have already completed their first semester under the two-year programme. In all these 50 years, they are the youngest students inducted by CSIO as we normally induct only postgraduates,” added CSIO director Dr Pawan Kapur.

The enthusiasm was evident among the nine students — four girls and five boys.

“CSIR plans to have its first Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research. The proposal will be presented in the Parliament in this session,” added Brahmchari.

Professor Brahmchari interacted with young researchers. He shared his vision with the students and refrained them from “joining the clan of their counterparts to pursue all the other jobs than engineering”.

Professor Brahamchari was in Chandigarh to attend the valedictory function of the 41st Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Memorial (Outdoor Finals) Tournament here at CSIO on Sunday. Professor Vani Brahmachari,a renowned academician from Delhi University, was the chief guest on the occasion.
