To render breast operations less painful and for better cosmetic results, surgeons of CSMMU will be trying their hands on endoscopic breast surgery to remove the cancerous part of the breast.
An expert from Japan will train the faculty members of Department of Surgery as well as 400 surgeons from across the state on November 6.
“Endoscopic breast surgery is common in western countries and Japan, but it is still a novel technique in India. Expertise and cost constrains were the main reasons for the technology being new to doctors in the country,” said Dr Sandeep Tiwari, Department of Surgery. “With advance drugs used in chemotherapy and radiotherapy, it is possible to reduce the size of tumours considerably,” he added.
The technique will be demonstrated by Dr E Fukuma of Kameda Medical Center, Japan on the occasion of the 35th Annual Conference of UP Chapter of Association of Surgeons of India, to be held between November 6 and 8.
“In India, breast lumps, whether benign or malignant, are generally operated through mastectomy or open breast surgery,” said Dr Tiwari.
“With the endoscopic technique, the surgery will be less painful for the patient, who can walk home within 48 hours of the surgery,” added Dr Tiwari.
The surgery, however, is preferred for lumps which are less than 2 cm in size and have no skin involvement.
Also, the lumps should not hamper the lymph nodes and the cancerous lumps should not be spreading fast, added Dr Tiwari.
The endoscopic surgery will cost more than the Rs 40,000 even in government hospitals, where open breast surgeries cost around Rs 5,000, he said.
