The Chandigarh Transport Undertaking is set to be modernised, with a proposal having been made for installation of Global Positioning System in all buses, providing people a facility for checking the time of arrival of buses through a mobile and keeping tabs on the mileage of buses, among other things.
As per the proposal, the first step will be to install GPS in all the buses. While the GPS was installed in the buses purchased under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), it has not been functioning efficiently. Even the screens that were installed at the bus stops had stopped functioning. It has been proposed to upgrade the existing system.
Through the GPS, among other things, tabs will be kept on the routes of the buses and the time taken by a bus to cover its route. A facility will be provided wherein passengers who have to catch a bus will be able to know the location and time of arrival through a mobile. Electronic ticketing machines will be introduced.
A variety of data will also be collected and analysed in order to increase efficiency of the bus service. This will include data about the number of passengers travelling on particular routes. This will help identify the more popular routes where more buses could be plied later.
The mileage of each bus as well as that delivered by every driver will be ascertained. Based on this, training will be provided to the drivers whose buses are giving low mileage. Ways and means of improving mileage will be taught to them.
Besides, the CTU workshops will also be computerised.
Special Secretary (Transport) Ajoy Sharma says the proposal is for complete modernisation of the CTU. "These measures would improve the efficiency of the bus service. We have given the proposal to World Bank and once it is approved, grants would be received that would facilitate the process of upgradation," he adds.
