Even as the two-month-old standoff between Cummins India Limited (CIL) management and Kirloskar Cummins Employees Union ended on Friday, senior executives of the company have decided to hold quarterly meetings with union leaders to avoid similar clashes in future.
We suffered production losses during the first 15 days of workers agitation. Though the production was restored partially on October 8,we lost out on some export orders, said Dinesh Castellino,vice-president (legal and company secretary),CIL.
Taking cue from this strike, the companys senior executives right up to the chairman have decided to hold elaborate meetings with union leaders. These meetings would be held on a quarterly basis. While emphasising on discipline at work,we will also convince them that the management cares for their welfare.
It was on September 15 that over 900 workers of CILs Kothrud facility went on a strike demanding reinstatement of six workers terminated on disciplinary grounds and revision of the wage agreement. The company operations were completely stopped for 15 working days; and resumed partially on October 8 with the support of diploma mechanical engineers and managers.
However, the strike continued for a month till over 150 workers resumed work on October 14. We recovered our losses this month, but a major chunk of workers has not reported for work, Castellino said.
The management had also suspended 56 production department workers for untoward incidents in the Kothrud plant.
On Friday, following the intervention of government officials, all the workers reported for work. In a meeting held on November 18 with Labour Minister Hasan Mushrif and MP Supriya Sule,it was agreed that 40 of the 56 suspended workers will be reinstated while the inquiry against 16 others will continue. The report will be placed before the Labour Secretary in four months.
