CBI officials handling the Commonwealth Games-related bunch of cases have confirmed to The Sunday Express that among the pile of documents recovered during the recent searches on Suresh Kalmadi was a mysterious document: a handwritten,unsigned letter from an alleged blackmailer. It demanded Rs 4 crore in exchange for not making public contents of a CD which would be embarrassing for the IOA-OC chief.

As of now,the letter does not have any evidentiary value or take our CWG cases any further, a senior officer said. But we are examining the possibility of someone planting the document to divert our probe and whether the alleged CD actually exists. It has added a new,though maybe not immediately relevant,dimension to the CWG probe.

Sources said they are verifying the authenticity of the letter and Kalmadi is understood to have been questioned about it. Officials said he was unable to explain how this letter happened to be among other important papers and CWG files at his residence.

CBI spokesperson Binita Thakur said,These are all minute investigation details which I am not aware of.

Kalmadis residences in Delhi,Mumbai and Pune and his office were raided on Friday,two months after the Games in which alleged bungling of several crores has been done by Organising Committee officials.
