CVC looks for public help to check corruption

In the backdrop of recent criticism of the Central Vigilance Commission for its lackadaisical attitude in dealing with corruption.

In the backdrop of recent criticism of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) for its lackadaisical attitude in dealing with corruption,Vigilance Commissioner R Sri Kumar said on Wednesday the organisation was now encouraging public participation to check corruption.

Kumar attributed the poor performance of CVC to shortage of staff and he said similar was the situation with other investigative agencies and watchdog organisations.

“The CVC is already under attack and criticism. But the situation is grim in view of the shortage of staff. The Central Bureau of Investigation, too, does not have a big network of staff to keep a check across the country,” he said.

In December 2010,the CVC launched the VIGEYE scheme to encourage people to send direct complaints. “Mobile recordings, videos or sound tapes can be forwarded to the CVC on mobile phone number 9223174440,” added Kumar.

He was speaking to the media on the sidelines of a meeting to sign an ‘integrity pact’ between Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited and NGO Transparency International India.

Chief Managing Director of SJVNL H K Sharma said the agreement would help promote better transparency and accountability in working of the organisation.

Transparency International chairman P S Bawa,a former IPS officer, said the integrity pact was an anti-corruption tool to help governments, business and civil society intended to fight corruption.
