CWG scam: CBI team searches Kalmadi’s bank lockers in Pune

The lockers were sealed by the CBI in December but were opened Tuesday to assist probe.

A team from the Central Bureau of Investigation raided two bank lockers of former CWG Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi on Tuesday as part of the agency’s ongoing probe into the alleged financial irregularities in Games contracts.

The team from Delhi searched the lockers in several Pune banks today.

The lockers were sealed by the CBI in December. The CBI had visited branches of the ICICI and Saraswat banks in Karvenagar in December when officials raided Kalmadi’s homes and offices in Pune and Delhi.

Several of Kalmadi’s top aides in the Organising Committee have been jailed in the last few months for alleged financial jugglery in awarding contracts.

Former secretary general Lalit Bhanot and former director general V K Verma are the latest in the list of top Games officials who have been arrested.

The duo were picked up for their alleged role in granting a Rs 107 crore contract to a Swiss timer company.

Bhanot and Verma were sent to judicial custody in Tihar Jail on Tuesday till March 15.
