Investigations into the New Delhi Commonwealth Games suffered a setback when it was discovered on Monday morning that all files stored on the computer of the Chief Vigilance Officer of the Organising Committee (OC) had been wiped out.

The CVO,Gurjot Kaur,a Joint Secretary-level officer of the Defence Accounts Service, discovered that all files on her computer as well as the contents of the hard disk had been deleted.

Kaur, who joined the OC in February last year,is the nodal officer for corresponding with agencies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC),the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and the Income-Tax authorities. She has been handling all internal vigilance matters as well. Officials said that the OC was processing around 20 vigilance cases when the incident occurred.

Jarnail Singh, the CEO of the OC,confirmed the development to The Indian Express and said that the committee would file a complaint with the Delhi Police.

He said an analysis of the CVO’s computer showed that it was activated at 10.41 am on Sunday, the day the high-security OC headquarters is officially closed.

The CVC,he said, had already been informed about the incident and an attempt was being made to retrieve back-up files. He said he held a three-hour meeting on the incident on Tuesday and hoped the Delhi Police would crack the case.

Officials said that while some parts of the OC building are under coverage of CCTV cameras, the office of the CVO was not.

The incident comes at a time when the OC is in a critical winding-up phase and when the last batch of contract files and documents are being handed over to the investigating agencies.

While a bulk of the material has already been handed over, the OC is still processing more requests from agencies. All such correspondence and details are stored on the CVO’s computer.
