Cyclone alert in TN,Andhra

Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea.

Coastal Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are bracing up to face cyclone Nilam. A deep depression lying 500 km southeast of Chennai has intensified into a cyclone storm and is likely to cross the coasts between Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh by Wednesday afternoon,bringing with it isolated heavy rainfall.

On Tuesday,heavy rain disrupted day-to-day life in Chennai city. Schools and colleges remained closed for the day and will remain so on Wednesday too. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea.

IMD forecast said windspeed can reach up to 90 kmph in Chennai. Danger signals ranging from five to seven have been hoisted in Chennai,Ennore,Cuddalore,Nagapattinam and Puducherry ports. Chennai port has stopped cargo operations but not berthing. It handles about 10 per cent of traffic passing through India’s major ports.

Five districts have declared holiday for educational institutions on Wednesday.

In Andhra Pradesh,a third warning signal was issued in Krishnapatnam,Vadarevu,Machilipatnam and Nizampatnam ports. Control rooms have been opened in coastal districts of Nellore and Prakasam.
