With cyclonic storm 'Phyan' menacingly approaching north Maharashtra and south Gujarat, the government has asked all educational institutions and offices in Mumbai and neighbouring district of Thane to close down on Wednesday afternoon.

"All schools and offices have been advised to close down for the day in view of the inclement weather that is likely to worsen," BMC Additional Commissioner A Maheshkar told reporters.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan informed the Legislative Assembly of the decision of shut down.

While the schools have been asked to shut down at 1 pm, offices have been advised to close by 2 pm, Maheshkar said after a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Johny Joseph at Mantralaya.

She said the BMC was arranging for buses at Chhatrapati Shivaji and Churchgate terminus to ferry people back home. All 24 control rooms of the BMC have been activated, she said, adding many trees maybe uprooted as the city and its adjoining areas were expected to experience high-speed winds reaching upto 90 KM per hour.

The machinery has been geared up to promptly clear the streets of the trees and people cautioned against taking shelter under them.

Asked if the advisory for closure of educational institutions and offices would be in force even tomorrow, she said no such decision had been taken as yet.

Make Bombay Union TerritoryBy: Mona Sharma | 11-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Bombay should be separated from Maharashtra and made an Union Territory. This way Bombay will be release from the clutches of Raj Thackeray and his Marathi goons.
Where are you heading guys?By: Prasad | 11-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The question is of cyclone and you are talking of corruption and involving in the talks of Gujjus and all. With this cyclone coming we should take utmost care and it's time to take care of each other. This is the start of Kaliyuga's end and we as humans are alone responsible for this situation. Shredding forests, no plantation, no care of environment is paying off now, and its breaking on us. The nature is showing how powerful he can be, and spreading the message all across the world that "DON"T MESS WITH THE NATURE, OTHERWISE IT WILL SCREW US LIKE ANYTHING".
CycloneBy: Abu Zafar Adil Azmi | 11-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Cyclones and other natural threats like earthquakes and tsunami are sign of Qiyamah. Human should me make strong relation to his creature. In these days, unfortunately this kind of incidents are common, but man don't take any lesson from them. It is time to remember Allah and worship him alone. It is so sad that after this kind of incident government and other institutions use them for their priceless political agenda. It is totally shame to humanity. People knows about Tsunami incident. After this their are so many cases of corruption and mismanagement. It proves our nature level of thinking. Now it is big question. Are we ready to take lesson from this sign?

I pity Mr. HarishBy: Harsh Varadhan | 11-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Mr. Harish's post is quite the proof that some such people need counselling. He is quite ignorant that the cyclone is targetting Maharashtra, skipping Gujarat. I am sure Mr. Harish has bags full of untaxed black money and nothing else.
