AS 12.12.12, the once-in-a-hundred-years date, draws near, the debate heats up among the would-be parents on whether to have the baby on the historic date or avoid it altogether.

While some parents say the desire for having a baby on the date is due to numerology, others say it is because of astrology and some say it is to cherish the memory of having a baby on a historic date.

While some nursing clinics in the city are set to make a killing, cashing in on the hype surrounding the day, others beg to differ.

Nevertheless, the day is not going to pass off as just another day with a section of anxious mommies already making reservations for delivering their child on the big day.

Says Dr Umesh Jindal of Jindal Hospital, Sector 18, "We have three patients who have requested for a delivery on the day through C-section. Only after going through the medical profile of the patients and their reports, we will conduct the deliveries on the day."

Is timing a delivery ethically and medically proper? "As a doctor, our prime concern is the health of the baby and mother. The delivery on request is done only if the baby is mature and we do not see any complication. Then we go ahead for request deliveries," she adds.

At the Fortis Hospital, Mohali, there are three deliveries lined up on a request basis for the big day.

However, not all the mothers want to have a baby on the much-touted "unique date" as they believe it will not be auspicious for their babies.

Says Dr G K Bedi, of Bedi Nursing Home, Sector 33, "There is so much hype around the date and many parents are anxious. But we have one would-be mother who does not want her baby to be born on the big day and has chosen a day prior to it. Everyone has their own beliefs. It all depends on the pregnancy and the health of the mother and child."
