With the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act (2007) in place, the Delhi Police have registered 233 cases in the last ten days against political parties and leaders for defacing public property, informed Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal at a press conference.
Also, 1,462 posters, 984 banners and 588 hoardings have been removed, and 136 wall-writings covered ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
During the Assembly elections last year, 1,127 FIRs were lodged under the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act (2007).
On the ongoing traffic drive, Dadwal said over 3.30 lakh violators have been challaned so far, which is an increase of over 1 lakh compared to same period last year. A total of 3,30,264 challans have been issued so far, compared to 2,27,544 during the corresponding period last year. “There is an increase of 46 per cent in total challans issued this year,” Dadwal said.
Besides, the police chief informed that the traffic helpline has got a new four-digit number — 1095.
The police detained 2,628 persons for creating trouble on Holi this year, against 863 held last year, registering a 214 per cent increase, said Dadwal.
Also, while 13 fatal accidents took place on Holi in 2008 and 17 in 2007, this year the number was only nine. The number of non-fatal accidents also came down — 40 this year, against 50 last year and 56 in 2007.
Dadwal added that ownership of 34,977 motorcycles have been verified in the last 30 days during a drive aimed at curbing crime carried out by motorcycle-borne men.
