Dadwal checks on Games security, seeks presentation

With the Commonwealth Games drawing closer by the day,the Delhi Police too has stepped up its preparations. Delhi Police commissioner Y S Dadwal has asked his top brass to prepare a “presentation” on security arrangements that need to be put in place for the Games.

In an order sent out to all special commissioners and joint commissioners of police on Monday,Dadwal has asked police personnel to take the help of professionals if necessary in preparing a detailed presentation on escort arrangements for athletes and VIPs visiting Delhi during the Games.

Police sources said Dadwal has asked for the presentation as he wants to ensure foolproof security arrangements during the Commonwealth Games. “Prior preparation helps in gauging the whole security scenario and making changes. It will also help the police avoid any last minute changes,” a senior police officer said.

Police sources said the presentation,to be completed within ten days, has to cover the routes that will see athlete and VIP movement as well as the security apparatus in place to secure them. Three stadiums that will host events during the Games — Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium,Indira Gandhi stadium, and Dhyan Chand Stadium – and the Games Village are also mentioned in the order, and the police commissioner wants details of security arrangements made for athletes and VIPs when they travel from these venues to the airport.

Police sources said Dadwal has asked the department to seek assistance from Joint Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Qamar Ahmed,DCP (South) H G S Dhaliwal and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police II (Central District) Prem Nath, who have attended such events abroad.

Sources said the order also specifically mentions two heads of state that might visit Delhi during the Games and Dadwal has sought the details of security arrangements made for such high-profile visitors.

The commissioner had said earlier that the Delhi Police would have incorporated another 10,000 personnel by the time the Games came around. “All vacancies will be met so that comprehensive arrangements can be made,” Dadwal had said.
