‘Dairy sector needs to adopt scientific methods’

Farmers from 110 villages of Samalkha and Gannaur participated in the Dairy Kisan Mela organised by Amrik Singh Cheema Foundation Trust at the Old Grain Market,Gannaur,on Monday.

Several scientists and dairy experts also participated in the mela. Addressing the gathering,chief guest Dr A K Srivastava,Director,National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI),Karnal,said the dairy sector contributes a great deal to the GDP of the country and could play a significant role in increasing the income and employment of the people in the rural areas.

He said India is the number one milk producing country in the world,with a total milk production of 104 million metric tonnes a year,but much more can be achieved if farmers adopt scientific technologies.

Dr R.S. Chillar,principal scientist at the Indian Agriculture Research Institute,New Delhi,said dairy farmers should have strong linkages with the local veterinarians to get timely information about ways to increase milk production.

Jagdeep Singh Cheema,chairman of the Trust,said the Trust is committed to improving the socio-economic conditions of farmers in the district.
