  • In a shocking incident, a Dalit woman was stripped and paraded naked in Talegaon village in this district on Tuesday by members of the liquor lobby who suspected that she had complained about their activities to the police. They also beat up her son.

On Wednesday, the taluka police arrested nine persons, including two women, for involvement in the act.

The arrested were: Shivaji Patil, B L Patil, Ganpat Jadhav, Arun Jadhav, Parubai Patil, S D Patil, Kamlakar Patil, Nitin Patil and Balasaheb Mane.

The woman, who met reporters on Tuesday evening, said some men suspected that she had written a letter to the rural police giving details about the illegal liquor dens in the village.

‘‘They caught me while I was leaving the village and stripped me in front of my son. They paraded me in the village. I was without clothes for hours in front of hundreds of people but no one helped me,’’ she said.

Later, they allowed her to cover herself with her sari and threatened to kill her if she went to the police. She hid in sugarcane fields and reached Solapur after travelling for hours.

Social activists Yashvant Phadtare and Jyoti Waghmare, who helped the woman, have demanded immediate and thorough investigation into the case now that preliminary arrests have been made. ‘‘The woman had informed the police about the threat but they failed to take any action,’’ they said.
