  • While she waits for her next Bollywood project, actor Rani Mukerji is hopeful that her small screen appearance will keep her visibility going

Those who know Rani Mukerji well, will vouch for the actor’s irrepressible spirit and her witty one-liners. Even after she has shot for five hours on the stretch at RK Studios, Chembur, for Sony’s Dance Premier League, Mukerji has her humour intact. Dressed in a Manish Malhotra floor-sweeper, looking svelte and oomph-laden, she cracks jokes at the organisers, who are running a tad bit behind schedule. Her small-screen debut seems to have done a world of good for her.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying myself, since it requires me to be spontaneous. For me, it is the dance and its various forms that clearly set the show apart. I have always been very fond of dancing and I couldn’t have chosen a better show to be a part of,” she states proudly, making a mention of all the difficult dances she did in Dil Bole Hadippa and reminiscing about her teenage years, when she loved performing on stage. “We did not have a platform then to be on television, otherwise I would have definitely participated. At least my mom would have made sure I did,” she laughs.

Mukerji, usually a reclusive actor with rare public appearances, says that the show will change that bit about her. “It has made me more accessible,” she agrees, as she sips on some tea. “I get to connect with the masses and interact with people from various backgrounds, which I wouldn’t be able to otherwise. Also, not many people in India go to the theatres to watch a movie. But every household in India is hooked to television. It will help me gain visibility, when I am not doing too many films,” she smiles, even as she takes time out in between breaks to mingle with the crowd. There’s enough bonhomie going for her as she makes small talk with the technicians, jokes around with the crew and breaks into an occasional song.

    ... contd.
