Global audit major KPMG has selected Dantewada Education City as one of the 100 urban infrastructure projects in the world. Coming up over 170 acres at Gidam on the Jagdalpur-Bijapur NH-30,the Education City will have around 15 institutes, including an engineering college,an ITI,a sports school,a tribal girls school,a Kasturba Gandhi Vidyalaya, besides a residential school for children orphaned in Naxal violence.
The importance of the project lies in the fact that Dantewada has seen the maximum incidents of police-Maoist violence in the last decade, with educational institutions being the biggest casualties. As civic administration failed to provide even basic amenities, tribals suffered the most.
The Indian Express earlier reported about the project that also drew praise from Chief Minister Raman Singh.
The recognition acknowledges the efforts of collector O P Chaudhary, who within a few months of assuming the charge, conceived and laid foundation of the Rs 100-crore project. The entire campus is solar-powered,and a few of its institutes have already started functioning. All institutes are set to get operational in 18 months from now.
Explaining the idea behind Infrastructure 100,KPMGs report notes: With more than half of humanity condensed to cities, which collectively make up less 2 per cent of planets land cover, urban infrastructure has become one of the worlds greatest challenges. The Infrastructure 100 was created to share those leading edge developments among those in the industry as well as raise infrastructures profile among those outside of the industry and clarify infrastructures importance and impact on society.
Besides the Dantewada Education City, four more projects are selected from India Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor,Chennai Solar Economic Zone,Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project,Gorai Dumping Ground Scientific Disclosure Project.
