Daredevil stunts, cultural show mark Indian police anniversary

Daredevil stunts on motorcycles by Himachal Pradesh women police officers stole the show at the function that marked 150th anniversary of the establishment of Indian police on Saturday.

The function, 'Spandan', was organised to showcase not just the skills and capabilities of Indian police but also their special talents.

The flavour of the evening was cultural programmes, display of traditional forms of battle skills and martial arts and show of modern capabilities of police personnel from across the country.

Motorcycle stunts by policemen are common but it was the first time that women participated in such an event, drawing a loud applause from over 1,000 police personnel present at the occasion.

Vice-president Hamid Ansari was the chief guest at the event that was attended by Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Minister of State for Home R P N Singh and Home Secretary R K Singh. Also present were several serving and retired director generals of police from the state and central police forces.

Police personnel from Bihar, Punjab, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Tripura, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Kerala, Maharashtra and Assam presented state-specific cultural programmes.

BSF, the only force to have a camel contingent, presented a camel show, while police forces from Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir participated in motorcycle stunts.

NSG commandos enthralled the audience by slithering down a rope from a hovering helicopter. The programme was organized and hosted by the Intelligence Bureau.
