They are a far cry from the oh-so-propah French manicures and ubiquitous pinks. Dark nail paints were, in fact, only flaunted by biker babes, rock-chic divas or Gothic lovers. Until now, when they’ve got a fresh lease of life thanks to Hollywood actors Jessica Simpson and Gwyneth Paltrow, and singer Madonna endorsing them. The divas have also taken away the casual tag from the paint by sporting them at formal red-carpet events.

Taking the cue, our very own Sonam Kapoor teamed her red Greco-Roman attire with black nails on the sets of the television show Oye! It’s Friday. She again flaunted her dark nails at a Bollywood awards function. Celina Jaitely went all-black recently and so did Kareena Kapoor.

Model Anchal Kumar thinks the look is “quite cool” but has a word of advice: “Wear a dark paint when the nails are blunt. It looks best that way,” she says.
Model Amanpreet Wahi, however, prefers only dark red and not black. “Black draws too much attention to the hands without really flattering them. Not everyone can carry off black. It goes well with a grunge look for youngsters,” she says.
