Dattawadi shootout: gangster arrested

Santosh Gawde,friend of gangster Nilesh Ghaiwal and main accused in the recent shootout in Dattawadi was arrested in Ahmednagar by the Anti-Extortion cell on Tuesday night. Other suspects — Amol Bade,Adesh Kale and Prashant Dhumal — were also taken into custody.

Gangster Nilesh Ghaiwal and associates had gunned down Sachin Kudle (30) and injured his younger brother Atul alias Pappu Kudle (24),both members of the rival Gajanan Marne gang,around 12.30 am on Sunday in the vicinity of Dattawadi police chowky.

The gangwar had lasted for half an hour. After firing six bullets,the gangsters had managed to escape on their motorbikes. Senior police inspector Dilip Chougule said Pappu was the main target of the attack but he escaped with a bullet injury on his hand. Santosh Gawde,a close aide of Ghaiwal,had also thrown a sharp weapon at him,but it missed the target.

Pappu had attacked Ghaiwal near Cummins Company in Kothrud on June 13,2009. The police said Ghaiwal had plans to eliminate Pappu since then,but both Pappu and Marne were arrested and jailed in the case.

Police sources said the Kudles had come to the Dattawadi police station late on Saturday night for meeting a gang member who was detained in a rioting case. As soon as the Kudles left the police station,around eight people,including Ghaiwal,chased them on motorbikes. They opened fire on the Kudles,with a bullet hitting Sachin who was riding a motorbike. He died on the spot while pillion rider Balaji Kadam was injured.
