  • In this border town young daughters of Abdul Majid Chek are still waiting for "'good news" about their missing father who disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1996 when militancy was at its peak in Baramulla. Chek was the eldest among the three brothers and after completing his education he started managing shop owned by his father in main market Baramulla. Being educated and well in tradesman skills, his electric shop had a good clientele in the town. Even some security force personnel used to buy items from his shop. In 1996, when Chek was on way to home from his shop he was abducted by some unidentified persons near his house in Kakar Hamam locality in old town Baramulla. After Chek's abduction many pointed their fingers towards some militants who were active in the town and blamed them for abduction. Within minute's news of Chek being abducted by unidentified person's spread in the town like a wildfire that left the family worried. At time of abduction - the well versed and polite shopkeeper was 37 years old, besides, his wife, he was also looking after his two younger brother's, old aged parents and two young daughters Muzamil and Mubashir who were then studying in Primary classes. Ten years have passed by. Now the minor daughters have grown up and are in College. But one question always haunts them and they still are looking for answers. "For what fault their young father was abducted and then went missing in custody of his abductors," is the question they pose their relatives. But, nobody in the family is able to answer them. Over the past many year's his relatives searched for his whereabouts at everyplace in the country and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. "We searched him every where, in Kashmir and other states," said Hafizullah Chek, his younger brother. "Even we looked for him in security force camps. But couldn't find him." Soon after abduction, family filed a missing report in Baramulla Police station. Police, however, say that the Chek was abducted by the militants who were active in the town. With a hope that Chek will return some day, his family has not taken compensation money from the government. "Every body in the house is waiting for him," says his younger brother. "He used to guide us and always helped in problems and we always pray for his return." Shopkeepers of the town especially his neighbors too miss his smile. "He had a smiling face and used to wear good clothes always," said Javid Ahmad his friend and neighbor. "I still pray for him."
