The Florida socialite who triggered a FBI probe that ended the career of the CIA director David Petraeus had visited the White House three times in the past year, according to an Obama administrative official.
Jill Kelley was given a White House tour and twice dined in the White House staff dining room after being invited by a mid-level aide, with her most recent visit coming on November 4, just five days before Petraeus resigned, according to unpublished visitor records.
The White House dates seem to offer further proof of how Kelley got in close contact with Petraeus and other top US generals based in Tampa, Florida where she threw lavish parties for the local elite, The Telegraph reports.
According to the paper, candid email exchanges disclosed recently, Kelley referred to dinners in Washington with both Petraeus and Gen Allen, the current US commander in Afghanistan.
The emails show that 1: Kelly and her husband joined Petraeus for his 59th birthday; 2: On one occasion she enjoyed dinner with both Petraeus and Gen Allen together; and 3: Both men appeared to look to Kelley for help when a Florida-based radio DJ threatened to deep fat fry a copy of the Koran, the paper said.
Boasting about one particular dinner, Kelley wrote on November 8, just a day before the Petraeus scandal erupted, "I was at the WH [White House] with my friends in the Administration this weekend - the stress was surreal! But glad POTUS [President of the United States] has been re-elected."
It was after complaints by Kelley in May earlier this year over anonymous harassing emails that opened an FBI investigation that exposed the extra-marital affair between Petraeus and his biographer Paula Broadwell, and led the former to resign from the agency, the paper said.
Allen is also currently under investigation for sending thousands of allegedly "flirtatious" emails to Kelley, raising further questions about the judgment of senior officers. He, however, denies have an affair with Kelley, as does Petraeus, the paper concluded.
