  • The Anti Extortion Cell (AEC) of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Thursday arrested gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s nephew Sajid Wagle alias Bhanja (37) for allegedly extorting money from a cable operator and internet service provider in Byculla. According to police, Wagle had demanded a sum of Rs 1 lakh to be paid to him every month by the complainant.

“For the past one month-and-a-half, Wagle had been making telephone calls to a cable operator and internet service provider operating in the Bori Muhalla area and telling him to hand over his operations to him. When the complainant refused to hand over his business, Wagle demanded a payment of Rs 1 lakh every month. The complainant has about 3,000 points (connections) in the area,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.

“The complainant kept delaying the payment for some time. Eventually Wagle used Dawood’s name and threatened to break his hands and feet if the money was not paid up, following which the complainant approached the Crime Branch. Wagle was arrested by the AEC on Thursday and has been remanded to police custody till August 4,” said Maria.

Wagle had been arrested in a similar case by Unit 1 of the Crime Branch on February 28 this year, in which he was booked for allegedly demanding Rs 50 per point from a cable operator whose business he wanted to take over. Wagle is Dawood’s elder sister Saeeda’s son, and resides in Mazgaon.
