Day 2 brings no relief, services hit yet again

Strike Threat of 'no work, no pay' proves no deterrent.

Essential services were hit again as various unions continued with their strike on the second day on Thursday. While the local bus service was not disrupted, the buses of Punjab and Haryana Roadways remained off the roads, and residents' complaints about power supply shutdown or disruption of BSNL phones were not entertained. Rallies and protests were organised at different locations.

The two-day strike was held as part of a nationwide call for bandh against the policies of the UPA government. All services are expected to be back on track by Friday.

With the public sector banks not functioning on Thursday as well, no transactions took place affecting the traders and businessmen. While the CTU Workers' Union had decided to ply buses on the local route so that commuters were not harassed, the Punjab and Haryana Roadways buses did not ply. Apart from Volvo buses to Delhi, the other long-route buses did not ply. These buses witnessed unprecedented rush with there being limited options available.

The threat of "no work, no pay" was also not a deterrent enough for the members of the UT Powermen Union who continued to be on strike for the second day as well. The complaints of the residents could not be redressed. Even on Wednesday, there was no one available to repair the faults as calls poured in from different sectors.

Postal services were affected and complaints to BSNL yielded no response. The unions of the other Central government offices also boycotted work.

Health services also had to bear the brunt. The unions were pressing for fulfilment of various demands. The Sanitation Workers' Union held a protest meeting. Apart form the Central government, the local administration was also blamed for the demands not being fulfilled.
