A day after violence broke out at PGI after protesting employees went on a rampage,sanitation services of the hospital were badly hit as the Class IV employees protested the arrest of their colleagues by the police and sat on a strike. Even as the PGI authorities disbursed the salaries to some of the employees today by installing a special counter,employees staged a protest against the hospital and the police’s alleged highhandedness. The police had booked 74 Class IV employees of the hospital under the preventive measures and another eight in case of rioting and criminal intimidation.

On the complaint of P C Sharma,Security Officer,PGI,the police arrested Ranjit Kumari,Kulbir Kaur,Jai Bhagwan,Gopal,Rohtash Thakur,Sarita Thakur,Parveen Kumar and Sonu,all Class IV employees on contract basis at PGI in case of rioting and criminal intimidation. All the eight had thrashed the security guard at PGI on Friday evening,while he was on duty and had also damaged the windowpanes of the security room. A case under section 147,149,332,353,342,506 of the IPC and Section 3 of the Prevention of Government Property Damage Act in Sector-11 police station. While all the 74 arrested under preventive measures were bailed out,other five of the eight arrested in case of rioting were sent to judicial custody and three women out of them were bailed out in court.

The Class IV employees of the institute went on a rampage yesterday over the issue of non-payment of salaries and had attacked the security guard as he stopped them from meeting the official concerned. They had also damaged the windowpanes of the security room following which the police took action and arrested them.

Today the employees went on strike paralysing the services of the institute.

Sanitation services of the hospital were hit hard in all the buildings of premier health institute of the region. Similarly garbage and biomedical waste could not be lifted from the wards in the absence of the staff. Even laundry work went for a toss as no linen was lifted from the wards and operation theatres.

Dustbins could be seen full of garbage with no sweepers around.

The staff at building of new OPD also had to work without any cleanliness as no sweeper reported at duty and in the absence of attendants the doctors themselves had to come out from their cabins time and again for calling the name of patients waiting in the OPDs for their turn.
